A Roundup of Ottomans & Foot Stools

I’m currently working on a client project and we have all of the “big pieces” in: the sofas, coffee tables, consoles, etc.  But, the thing I’ve had the hardest time finding is the perfect foot stools!  You’d think this little piece of furniture would be easy, but it’s actually trickier than you think.  Here are some things I’ve been trying to balance during the search process:

  1.  We have all upholstered pieces so I wanted to introduce a new texture, like leather, velvet or wood.
  2. The stools have to be pretty “clean” — as in a big, lumpy ottoman is not going to look cohesive in the room.
  3. We wanted the height to be around 17″ – 19″ tall, so that one’s legs would not end up higher than the chair seat heights.
  4. Price point in the $300 – $350 range.

This turned out to be a tall order! But luckily, some of the big retailers have just released some great options over the last month and they were worth the wait!  Check these out:

West Elm Mid-Century Upholstered Stools. On sale: $135-169! Love the clean legs on this stool.

I also love this “Director’s Stool” from Cb2 — such a great deal for $199!

Finally, while this pouf wasn’t going to work for this particular project, I recently used this for another project and am in LOVE.  This Moroccan Pouf from Wayfair is all that, y’all…seriously soft and fabulous to look at.

I hope this has given you some ideas!  As they say, “The devil is in the details” and this was a tough nut to crack.  I’m excited to reveal this project later this spring.  I’ve been working on it since OCTOBER — so it will be truly fun to show you what patience and time can do to transform a space!

Happy Wednesday! xo ~Maria

Welcome Spring: Creating an Inviting Outdoor Space

Happy Monday!  Last week, I decided I wanted to reclaim our screened-in porch from what had been a long winter and pollen-filled spring.  After a thorough power washing, it was ready to be transformed!

Creating an inviting outdoor space is relatively easy if you think of your deck or porch as a mere extension of your home.  The same elements that make the inside of your home inviting will make your outdoor area a relaxing retreat:

  • Colorful throw pillows
  • Outdoor rugs
  • Throw or light blanket (for cool nights)
  • Candles & Lanterns
  • String lighting and/or lamps
  • Art
  • Accessories
  • Tables for various purposes (dining, end tables, coffee table, & even console tables)
  • Plants and flowers of various sizes and colors.

I made it a point to approach this space just as I would my living room or bedroom, wanting it to reflect our family and what we enjoy doing outside: dining, entertaining and reading.

BEFORE...

BEFORE… The pollen is strong in the South, y’all!

AFTER: I stored all of the pillows and cushions in large, plastic garbage bags over the winter so they were ready to go!

AFTER: I stored all of the pillows and cushions in large, plastic garbage bags over the winter so they were ready to go!  No cleaning or anything required because I did it all last fall.

A fun tablescape adds SO MUCH to your table.  Use elements from the outdoors like shells, sand, stones, lanterns, candles and more.  Vary the height of the objects on the table and mix up textures.  Here’s a close up of the one I created on our porch.

Ready for dinner on the porch – one of our favorite things to do in the spring!

Finally, I decorated our old console table with art and candles to create a vignette that adds interest to the porch and makes it feel more home-like.

In the end, creating an inviting outdoor area is all about mindset.  If you approach this space as an extension of your indoor space, you’re bound to create an area that seamlessly integrates into the rest of your home.  It doesn’t have to cost a fortune, either. Most of my throw pillows and even the furniture are from Target.  I used Pottery Barn to source interesting accessories for the tablescape, but went to Home Goods for other items.  Look around your own house….you’re bound to find something that you can use outside. (I repurposed our old living room console table and discovered it was perfect for the porch!)

Finally, I want to leave you with this lovely and appropriate quote from Melissa Michaels of The Inspired Room…

Spring/Summer Home Prep List

Hello Everyone!  I’ve just returned from spending two days in High Point for the Spring International Furniture Mart.  It was exciting, inspiring and exhausting all at the same time!  I will be sharing furniture trends and what I saw on Friday Finds…you won’t want to miss it.  Today however, I’m busy regrouping at my own house and trying to get my head around all that needs to be done now that spring (um…summer?!) is finally here to stay!

Here’s my master “Get Ready for Summer” Home To-Do list:

  1. Power wash the exterior of the house to get all the pollen and winter grim cleaned up.
  2. Clean windows – inside and out.
  3. Change filters around the house.
  4. Plant flowers in pots and containers — which is a feat for me!  I have a black thumb….
  5. Re-work landscaping in front of the house.
  6. Install new solar lights around perimeter of walkway.
  7. Schedule mulching with landscaping company.
  8. Clean out the garage.  (A big job that will require family involvement.  My husband is cringing as he reads this!)
  9. Once power washing is complete, set up screened-in porch and take out cushions, pillows and decor from winter storage.
  10. Put away winter gear, boots, sleds, etc.
  11. Dry clean winter wool and down coats…. also, cashmere and wool sweaters.
  12. Put winter clothes into summer storage.  Take out summer clothes from storage bins.
  13. Have inside carpets professionally cleaned.
  14. Go through kids’ clothing and decide what’s worth saving for next year and what can be given away.  Store winter clothing and take summer clothes out of storage.

That’s a LOOONG list!  These are the things I need to do to feel ready for the summer.  I pace myself because it can’t all be done in a day or even a weekend.  I also decide what tasks I’m going to hire out.  For example, last year I rented a pressure washer and power washed our porch and the exterior of our house myself.  This year however, I have neither the time nor desire to do it — so I hired the guys over at Top Notch (in Durham) to do it.  They were great and I was happy to outsource that task!  I also make sure my family is involved so that we all share the work of making our home functional and beautiful for the change of season.

What’s on your list?  Do you have a master list that you do every year?  I’m curious how you guys approach the seasonal change…  Please share what’s a MUST-do for you.  My absolute must is setting up the screened-in porch.  I love sitting outside to entertain, read and share meals with our family.  Here’s what my porch looked like as of this morning….That’s Southern POLLEN, y’all!

Pollen is REAL in the South.

A winter and spring’s worth of grime and pollen.

Tune in tomorrow to see the “AFTER” shots of this porch.  Can’t wait for you to see the transformation…and get inspired to tackle your own outdoor space if you haven’t already done so!

I’Making Time to Exercise

I recently had a conversation with some friends about making time to exercise. Many of them are moms who work outside of the home either full or part time. We talked about how it can be really challenging to carve out time for a workout during the day. Mornings can be very rushed as we all hurry to get out the door and then the day fills up quickly. Before we know it, it’s time for school pickups and dinner prep.

It often seems like if we add something to our schedule then we must take something away. For a lot of us, when our workload increases the first thing to be let go is our workout. Sometimes it feels like exercise may not be as important as the other tasks on our to-do list. Shouldn’t we spend our energy on something that will have an immediate outcome (finish the laundry, complete that project, make dinner)?

I definitely understand. My schedule has changed so much since the girls were born and I know how hard it is to break away for exercise when there are a million other things left to do. There are a few things that have helped me stay consistent with my workouts and I wanted to share those with you.

Put it on the calendar. Every Sunday I take a look at the upcoming week’s schedule and decide what days I am going to the gym, what days I will be going to a group class, and if I am going to take a rest day. And then I add it to my calendar as I would any other appointment or meeting and I commit to it as best as I can. Yes, there are times when I just can’t make it to the gym for whatever reason, but I almost always stick to my schedule. For example, I typically go to the Y during lunch 3-4 days per week. It’s on my calendar. I take a class on Wednesday evening. It’s on my calendar.

Making Time to Exercise

Commit and pay in advance. Knowing that I have already paid for my class and would essentially be wasting money if I didn’t go really motivates me to show up. The same holds true if you have a personal trainer. You’ve paid for that session and someone is expecting you. That definitely keeps me accountable. A lot of places also charge a fee for late cancellations/no shows, which also encourages me to stick to my schedule.

Recruit a buddy. If I make plans with a friend to take a class then I don’t want to disappoint them by skipping out. Find someone who would go to that 7 am yoga class with you or plan on meeting at lunch for a workout. A friend and I occasionally text each other our workouts and share fitness ideas. Even though we aren’t physically together, it inspires me to try the workout so I can report back to her.

Have a detailed goal. A consistent message in my personal training coursework is to have detailed and measurable goals. I cannot stress this more. It’s not enough to say, “I want to lose weight.” Be specific. Think about what you want in as much detail as possible. When do you want to achieve this goal (be realistic!)? Take into account how many days per week you can workout and what your level of commitment is. By having a clear picture of WHAT you want you want you have a real goal to keep you focused and motivated. If you aren’t sure how to get there, you may want to enlist professional help from a personal trainer, health coach, nutritionist, or counselor.

Your workout is YOUR workout. Do your thing. I don’t believe we should ever judge others by their choice of exercise or how they want to spend their time. We all have different needs, goals, and preferences. There’s nothing wrong with someone who wants to use the elliptical or walk on the treadmill for an hour everyday. Or someone who wants to do cross fit five days a week. Or 20 minutes of yoga in the morning. Let’s applaud one another for carving out that time and showing up. The best workout for YOU is one that you enjoy doing and will stick to consistently.

How do you make time to exercise? Do you prefer to exercise with others or by yourself? ~ Alyssa

Friday Finds: Springtime in Durham

Happy Friday, everyone!  This week my kids have been on spring break and since we just got a new puppy, we’ve been enjoying a “stay-cation.”  Luckily, the weather has been glorious all week — perfect spring weather to enjoy all that Durham has to offer.  Let me tell you, Durham has A LOT to offer in the spring.  It’s such a great town all year round, but especially during late March and early April when everything is in bloom and it’s not yet 95 degrees and humid.

Here’s a list of some of my favorite springtime spots in Durham…

  1.  The Duke Gardens— The gardens are a gem and right now, everything is in full bloom.  It’s jaw-dropping beautiful.  You don’t have to know a lot about botanicals to enjoy this special place.  It’s perfect for any age, although kids in particular love feeding the ducks, climbing the large magnolia trees and running around the open grassy areas.  Pack a picnic and head over there soon — before all the blooms fade!

2.  American Tobacco Campus — The ATC has so much to offer: great restaurants, an open air pavilion and a grassy knoll perfect for a picnic blanket.  This week we had lunch at the Mellow Mushroom then just walked around and took in the great campus.  Check out all that the ATC has to offer, including a calendar of events and list of restaurants:  https://americantobaccocampus.com.

3.  The Parlour — Just a quick walk down from the American Tobacco Campus lies heaven in the form of handmade ice cream.  The Parlour offers amazing flavors of freshly made ice cream like Salted Butter Caramel, Apple Pie and Rose Chai.  They even have vegan flavors made with coconut milk, including my favorite, Vegan Mocha.  Check their site for daily flavors, hours, etc.: https://theparlour.co.

Old Fashioned goodness… Even the menu is inviting.

4.  ENO River State Park — After you’ve eaten your way through downtown, burn off those calories hiking one of the many trails along the Eno River.  Pack a bathing suit, towel and your water bottle for a day of hiking, swimming, sunning and exploration.  On the day we hiked, we saw water snakes, water spiders, a turtle, fish and several birds.  It’s really peaceful to hike along the river in the spring when various flowers are in bloom and it’s not yet very buggy or muggy.  For a complete guide and map of the park, check out their site.  You can download a printable map, read detailed trail descriptions, apply for a camping permit, and more!  http://www.ncparks.gov/eno-river-state-park/trails

5.  Delicious Dinners — End your day at one of my favorite dinner spots.  There are so many excellent restaurants in Durham but my top three are, Gocciolina, Pizzeria Toro and Vin Rouge.

IMG_7684

Located in North Durham in an inconspicuous little strip mall, Gocciolina serves up some of the best pasta and Italian dishes in Durham.

Pizza from Pizzeria Toro is cooked to perfection in a wood-burning oven.  I also love the kale salad and their tiramisu.

Enjoy the spring weather, everyone!  I hope this has inspired some of you to get to Durham this weekend.
