An Updated Guest Room with Vintage Home South

Happy fall, everyone!  As the weather cools and the leaves start changing colors, I start thinking about all the wonderful upcoming seasonal events, like Halloween and Thanksgiving.  Our New York family members always visit in the fall, so that inspired me to refresh our guest room and get it a bit more organized.  I enlisted the help of Jen Devlin, owner of Durham’s beautiful home decor & furnishings store, Vintage Home South.  Some of you may recall that I did a “Friday Finds” feature about the store this summer. If you haven’t been yet, you really need to make it a point to get there.  These inspirational photos, taken by Shalini Ramasunder of Kenan Parker Photography, may inspire you!

To get organized for upcoming visitors, I decided to update a few features of our guest room.  The first was to make the bed a little more inviting by purchasing new sheets and then incorporating this fun “Durham 27705” pillow — a reminder to guests of where they’re visiting!  Vintage Home South carries many such pillows with various local cities and zip codes.  The headboard was an AMAZING find from Walmart.com of all places!  It’s grey linen with nail head finish, and for $119, you cannot beat it! The distressed mirrors above the bed were a VHS find.  They accent the linen pillows and headboard.

An inviting bed makes guest feel welcome.

The other thing that guests really need is some lighting next to their bed, and this gorgeous lamp from Vintage Home South solves that issue!  The candle is also from VHS and comes with a small box of matches…LOVE!

Finally, one of the first thing guests usually ask for is the Wi-fi password.  I found this adorable template online, typed in our password, then printed and framed it!  How great is that?  Click here for the template!

Most people are not checking in bags these days to avoid the additional fees involved.  So, one of the things I have in our guest room is a basket of toiletries I’ve collected from various hotel visits.  This is a small, thoughtful touch that is greatly appreciated by visitors.  Some shampoo, conditioner, dental products and soap are just a few essentials to include.  You can also include things like tissue, lotions, etc.

Lastly, I like to have a place for guests to sit and some additional blankets in case it’s cold.  This blanket ladder was made by my father-in-law based on this template I found on lovegrowswild.com!  It was apparently easy to make, but he does have a huge workshop in his basement, so “easy” is relative, I guess.

The Jack Chair from Vintage Home South is a great piece, as are the woven blankets.

Here’s a list of things you might include in your guest room to get it ready for fall visitors:
